Storytelling has become one of the marketing industry's favourite phrases of late – but what does it take to produce a genuinely great story?
To find out, The Drum is asking some of the leading figures from the worlds of film and entertainment to share the secrets of their craft in our new video series 'What's the Story?'
The first storyteller in our hotseat is David Harbour, star of the smash Netflix series Stranger Things.
For years Harbour was the classic 'working actor' – Ivy-league trained and highly respected by theater, film and television peers but never fully a breakout a star.
That was until Stranger Things came along and vaulted his character, police chief Ben Hopper, into the pop culture stratosphere and Harbour, deservedly, squarely into the spotlight.
From there came an impassioned speech at the SAG Awards, and Harbour was seen as a champion for those who never give up, those who hone their crafts honestly, and those who use their art to “battle against fear, self-centeredness, and exclusivity of our predominantly narcissistic culture”.
In our first installment of What’s the Story?, The Drum's series on storytelling, Harbour’s strong opinions are at the forefront about what makes a great story, explaining that “art and stories can occasionally remind us of why we are alive” in the first place.
